The Lewis-Clark Valley

LOCAL:

The League of Women Voters of the Lewis-Clark Valley began as a provisional League in 1953 under the leadership of Pauline Jacobs. The local League's Voter Service efforts were one of the first contributions to the community and have continued throughout our local League history. Leagues most notable voter service efforts: involvement in candidate forums and town hall meetings, voter information and registration, publication of an Idaho Directory of Elected Officials and our annual Legislator's luncheon.

The League's first study in 1954, "A Study of the Need for a Local Sewage Disposal Plant" was adopted and the members worked hard for the successful passage of a bond issue in 1957. Early on, the City Manager form of government was studied and a position statement was adopted in 1959 and readopted and updated in 1964, 1977 and 1988. The League has a long history of supporting efficient and responsible government. In 1972 the League joined forces with other organizations to publicly support Levee Beautification. A study of the Nez Perce County Fair Board procedures and practices resulted in the Fair Board's adoption of rules developed by a League member. The League's involvement in recycling began in 1977 with the involvement of our local League president. The League was instrumental in helping the Port of Lewiston follow Idaho Code with regard to public notification of board vacancies and budget hearings. The League has continued its support for building a new county jail and city library. As long as water flows past Lewiston, League members will continue to study the issues as they evolve.

League’s most notable voter service efforts include but are not limited to: involvement in candidate forums and voter education meetings, voter registration, and annual publication of an Idaho Directory of Elected Officials.
